Grand Canyon University contracts Clearwing to install L-Acoustics audio system

Clearwing Systems Integration was contracted by Grand Canyon University Athletics for the installation and commissioning of a new audio system at GCU’s newly remodeled Brazell Field at GCU Stadium. The three-story-high arena now boasts state of the art amenities and a massive 4,200 person seating capacity. Since 1962, the arena had lacked a sound reinforcement system capable of wide, even coverage and volume.

After consulting with the GCU Athletics Department and Ian Schnell, GCU’s AV Department Supervisor, a new L-Acoustics sound package consisting of ARCS Wide and Focus full-range loudspeakers and LA4X and LA12X amplified controllers was chosen. The entire PA consists of 13 arrays, along with two individual speakers to cover the seating near the match line and a rear firing array to broadcast audio to the playing field. Clearwing Systems Integration was tasked with the full installation which includes a Yamaha TL5 console, Shure wireless microphone system, and custom rigging for the arrays.

The design of the stadium utilizes tapered I-beams which pushed hang points deeper into the audience than previously anticipated. That challenge was overcome by adjusting the rigging angles in the field. The spacing of the beams was also not ideal. This triggered the requirement of flying two side fill speakers at each end of the stadium seats thereby providing full coverage to the stadium. The incorporation of ATM Flyware beam clamps by Adaptive Technologies provided Clearwing Systems Integration with a progressive method of installation and adjustment for the array hang points, safely securing the arrays at the appropriate locations and angles.

Minor challenges to the installation were due to inclement weather and surface conditions that Clearwing Systems Integration pushed through to meet their deadline of February 16th. The installation was completed in almost 6 days and fully commissioned almost a month ahead of the scheduled opening day for the GCU Antelopes Baseball Team.
